Have you heard of the HEXBUG Nano V2? I hadn’t, until just recently when Irina, (the owner here at I Love My Kids Blog) attended the 2013 Time to Play Mag event where they displayed the COOLEST toys for the upcoming season-see her post here! She said the HEXBUGs were a small bug toy that could an climb up vertically, horizontally, around corners, through loops and tubes.
I watched a couple of commercials and they seemed pretty fun, but the real test was to ask the kids on my school bus if they were as fun as the commercials make them look. At the first mention of “HEXBUG” my students erupted into a full flurry of excitement. I knew I had to check out these little bugs for myself! The HEXBUGs are about the size of my thumb. Once they are turned on they are able to walk by themselves, flip over, climb tubes, and more!
We received this awesome “Ultimate Build Party Kit” from HEXBUG so we could host a party and invite friends over to come play with us!
My kids were SO excited that they just had to help me unload the box-It was LOADED!
In our Ultimate Build Kit we received:
30 nano V2 single packs
1 Nano V2 Sky Max Kit
1 Nano V2 Barrel Roll Kit
1 Nano V2 Black Hole Kit
And 2 Nano V2 Hurricane kits!
We put it all together to we could snap a photo and were really excited to get our party started! We invited our friends to come on Saturday for a party and got busy planning bug themed snacks, games, and putting together each of the kits so we could watch these bugs climb!
As we were prepping for our party, we realized that HEXBUG Nano V2 single packs come in 6 different colors: red, pink, blue, yellow, green, and black! Each single kit comes with a bug, battery is included, a tube, and a connector piece which allow you to connect multiple tubes together with friends, so fun! (These retail for $7.99 on the HEXBUG site)
The night before our party we got out each kit and put them together so we could be ready for our guests to arrive. The first one I put together was the Sky Max. It did come with generic directions, but I didn’t find them very helpful. It was mostly pictures, with not very much text. These were all the pieces it came with:
The trickiest part was figuring out the “stoppers” that you attach to the orange base. These “stoppers” prevent the HEXBUGS from exiting the platform where no tube is connected. The white pieces are arms that that can be extended or not extended, depending on where you place them. (TIP: Always place them so the arm extends to the right).
They are VERY easy to attach to the base….IF you do it right! You just line up the indents and it easily slides in with the white arm extended to the right. If you put it backwards, it won’t work-I learned this the hard way.
After about 10 minutes it was all set up. The tubes are connected with white connector pieces. With a quick squeeze at the sides they are easy to take on and off, so easy that my children can do this by themselves! Here is our put together Sky Max kit-it came with it’s own HEXBUG that was grey!
My girls were VERY excited to try out these little bugs, while I was putting it together, the anticipation was growing. They had gathered an “audience” to watch our very first HEXBUG experience!
My kids grabbed their HEXBUGs, turned them on, and set them loose in the Sky Max! Their reaction was PRICELESS! They were laughing, squealing, and cheering on their HEXBUGs!
These bugs can really climb! I was so impressed. They could power through any challenge, if they tipped over, got cornered, met another bug in a tube, after just a couple of seconds the HEXBUG was able to flip itself back over or push through the problem. It was incredible to watch and REALLY FUN too!
The next afternoon was party time! Since it is was right after lunch we made just a few “bugged themed” snacks for the kids: ants on a long and dirt cups. We had juice to drink and some chocolate toffee bars for everyone to enjoy.
At 1 pm our doorbell started ringing and friends were piling up–check out all of the shoes we had in my entry way by 1:03 pm!
We started the party out by gathering in the dining room. We had 24 children that came (4 not pictured came a bit later in the party).
I showed them what a HEXBUG looked like and explained how cool they were! I put the bug down on the table (while it was still turned on) to grab a tube for the bug to crawl in and the HEXBUG made it’s way through the snacks on the table. The children thought that was hilarious!
I explained to them that they only work on hard surfaces. I let the kids guess why. We heard some pretty funny answers, but it was a 7 year old that answered correctly by saying they work by vibration and on soft surfaces (like carpet) the vibration is absorbed. (See—this is a learning toy too!) I set a tube straight up and the kids went crazy because HEXBUGS- #theycanclimb!
Then I grabbed another HEXBUG & tube and we had a race! (For the record-yellow won!)
Then I added 3 tubes together and stood them vertical. I asked the kids if they thought the HEXBUGS could climb the whole thing–they all squealed, “YES!” and as you can guess, it did….quite fast even!
By this point the kids REALLY wanted to get their hands on one of these fun toys. So I said, raise your hand if you want a HEXBUG of your very own! All hand shot up in the air! I pulled out my giant box full of 30 HEXBUG single packs and told them they could choose any color they wanted–it turned crazy quickly and kids were diving towards the box!
I’ve got to give credit to HEXBUGs for making such an EASY-to-open package. Even the younger kiddos (3&4) were able to open the single pack themselves. You just slip your finger in between the plastic and paper and pull apart. EASY-I did this one with my left hand while taking a picture—it is that easy!
The HEXBUGs are also very easy to turn on, just switch the button on the bottom. My dining room was full of HEXBUGs and joyful children!
Some of the older boys had to seek refuge from the craziness by going into another room! 🙂
The kids had been playing for about 10 minutes and were having so much fun it was tricky to get them to turn off their bugs for a minute so I could introduce some of the other products! I finally got them all quiet and asked them if they wanted to see something SUPER COOL! They all hollered, “YES!” Then I brought out the Black Hole set, the Sky Max set, and the Hurricane set…..there a few dropped jaws and several audible oooooohs and ahhhhhhs! The kiddos wasted NO time and within minutes there were groups of kids all over my house playing with different sets!
The kids were playing great together and the adults were enjoying chatting with each other!
We were over an hour into the party and there were NO signs of anyone wanting to leave the bugs and play in the toy room, they were completely enthralled with the HEXBUGS! A few of the kids got creative and made an entire new design!
These HEXBUGs are recommended for children ages 3+. The 3 year old’s loved them all the way up to the 12 year old’s–ok, I should include the 30+ year old’s too-especially the Dad that came to the party, he had just as much fun creating new sets as the kids did!
At the end of the party, we did a door prize for the Barrel Roll kit. Every child had their name in the hat and my friend drew a name–this lucky little gal just turned 3 and she was the randomly chosen winner! She had some VERY happy older siblings!
As the party was winding down and there were only a few guests left, one attendee, who dressed as a blue morpho butterfly so she could be a “bug” too used the pieces of the sets to spell out names of some of the other attendees who had come! It was pretty impressive!
The party was a great success and all the kids left with a HEXBUG in their hand and more on their Christmas Wish List. The next day, we ended up having 4 boys over to our house after church as their sister had to be taken to the ER. After lunch I pulled out the HEXBUGs and for 2 hours they had a blast, creating, playing, and racing! Check out the set they made!
These little bugs are AS FUN as the commercials make them look! All HEXBUG Nano V2 products I have posted about here can be purchased on their website HERE. You can follow HEXBUG on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest!
