Using Netflix to Teach Your Kids About Honesty

As a parent do you remember the first time your child told a lie?  I’m sure if you’re like me you don’t really remember the exact moment but it was probably some time when they were a toddler.  It could have been a simple lie like when you ask your child if they wrote in crayon on the living room wall.  And they answer you “no” as they have a crayon in their hand.  I’m pretty sure that was not the last and only lie your heard coming from your child’s mouth.  The important thing is to teach your kids that being honest is very important.  Not only is it a good thing to lead by example but to be able to show your kids real examples.  I find that using entertainment to supplement the lessons I teach them is a very useful tool in parenting.  When I say entertainment I’m referring to books, TV shows, songs, and movies.  There are some many great things to show kids on Netflix that are not only entertaining but provide good life lessons.

liar on netflix

Right now on Netflix you will find a series called “Little Princess” which is based on a best selling children’s book by the same title.  Episode 9 in season one is titled “I didn’t do it.” This episode is about lying, and then finally telling the truth.  It is more appropriate for younger kids but I’m pretty sure all kids would find this show entertaining.  Another TV series that is available on Netflix is the show “Jessie.”  My kids really enjoy this show and I’m pretty sure they have seen every episode.  It is about a Texas teen named Jessie that moves to NYC to work as a nanny for a family.  Each episode teaches various life lessons while keeping the kids entertained.  Episode 14 from season 1 is called “World Wide Web of Lies”, and you guessed it, it deals with lying and rumors.  It is a good example of how gossiping and lying is wrong and can really hurt someone’s feelings and reputation.

Another great series on Netflix that my kids enjoy watching is called “A.N.T Farm.”  It is from Disney and it is about a pre-teen girl name Chyna who is a talented singer who skips ahead to a special performing arts high school.  In episode 9 of season 3 Chyna accidentally ingests some truth serum and is forced to tell the truth.  The episode does a great job of dealing with those white lies we tell everyday. You know the kind of white lies we tell so we don’t hurt other people’s feelings.  Well this episode of A.N.T Farm does a hilarious job of getting across the message about lying and being honest.

kid-friendly titles related to lying and honesty

If your kids are teenagers there is a new series that just came out on Netflix called “Bloodline.”  It is considered a thriller and is about a family that lives in the Florida Keys.  On the surface the family is a hard working pillar of the community. However when their estranged son comes back to town he threatens to expose their dark secrets and shameful past.  I’ve only seen one episode so far but it looks really good and intense.  Be sure to check out this title and all the other great movies, TV series, and documentaries that are available on Netflix.

How do you cope when you catch your kid lying? Whether growing pains or more of a laughable moment, we want to hear about it. Check out Bloodline along with some additional kid-friendly titles related to lying and honesty for inspiration.
