As we head into the middle of October, the new school year is in full swing! From soccer games to costume parties, the busy fall season can often run us down and leave us stuck at home, sick with cold/flu symptoms or accidentally spreading germs. Especially for kids in crowded classrooms, it’s important to practice healthy habits to keep sickness at bay – but can we do more?

5 Easy Ways to Keep Your Child Healthy this fall
- Cover your cough: “Always cover coughs and sneezes. Fail to do so can spread diseases.” Teach kids to “cover” their coughs and sneezes by coughing into the crook of their arm if they don’t have a tissue. This way the germs aren’t “caught” in their hands and spread to surfaces and other children by their hands.
- Hands away keep germs at bay: Always remember to keep hands away from eyes and mouth. Hands are often covered in germs. Eyes, nose and mouth are the entry points for germs to get into our body and make us sick.
- Sharing isn’t always caring: Don’t share water bottles or food. Even though we’ve all been taught to share, anything that goes in your mouth should never be shared with friends – especially during the colder months when cold and flu viruses usually spread like wildfire.
- Clean hands are key: Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer – this is probably our number 1 rule to cut down on colds and flu. A fun trick is to teach your kids to sing “Happy Birthday” while washing their hands to ensure that they get good and clean. Or even perhaps to sing “Let it go” Wash hands or use hand sanitizer especially before eating.
- Don’t forget your vitamins: Although a healthy diet is essential for all growing kids, it isn’t always enough.
