As a parent one of my biggest concerns is the safety and well being of my children. So when I heard about the Safe Kids Day event being held in Manhattan I was very excited. The event is organized by Safe Kids Worldwide and was sponsored by many corporate and individual donors. After checking out their website I was eager to meet some of the people behind this movement. I call it a movement because they are doing there best to educate people about children’s safety in order to reduce the number of childhood preventable deaths. According to their numbers 1 million children die every year from preventable injuries. Safe Kids Worldwide is at the forefront in raising awareness about children safety issues.
The event was held in downtown Manhattan on the border of Chelsea and the Meat Packing district. It was about a block or so away from the high line in a street level open space building. On the street were food vendors providing free food to attendees, an old fire truck for the kids to check out, an ambulance, and the red carpet. Inside were a variety of booths some with games for kids to play and others with safety oriented themes. For example there was a full size SUV with a driving simulator to teach kids about safe driving. There was a booth where they fit children for bicycle helmets and then gave them the helmets for free. There was a face painting booth and a ring toss game. There was also a pool of rubber balls where the kids could jump in wearing life jackets. There was also a very cool talking car seat that would make attempts at guessing your name. I’m assuming this was meant to get kids to be friendlier with their car seats.
Overall the event was a real eye opener to children’s safety issues. The exhibits and people working there were very informative and beneficial. It was really nice to see people from the community coming together to participate in this day. If everyone that attended the Safe Kids Day spread the word about children’s safety then together we can reduce the amount of preventable deaths.
