Pottery Barn Kids Holiday Handprint Ornament Keepsake

12/12/2012 By Irina Leave a Comment

With the holidays right around the corner I decided to take a trip to my local shopping mall.  It was a weekday and early in the day so I wasn’t too worried about fighting the crowds.  Most of my holiday shopping is done online but I always like to get out to the stores for gift inspiration.  One store that I was really interested in visiting was PotteryBarn Kids.  My husband and I have always been big fans of the regular Pottery Barn but haven’t had much experience with the kid’s version.

When I arrived at the mall it wasn’t that crowded which was good.  After walking around for a bit to see if there were any new stores and to grab a cup of coffee I found Pottery Barn Kids.  I was delightfully surprised by the variety and quality of the items that they had to offer for kids.  There was kids and baby furniture of all types, even pretend play-kitchen furniture and good size toy refrigerator, great gifts and stocking stuffers and much more.
Walking through the store and seeing all the cute baby furniture only made me wish I had found Pottery Barn Kids when my children were still babies.  Well I guess it is okay since they do have furniture for kids and I heard there is even a Pottery Barn Teen.  This will be good since one of my kids is on the verge of becoming a teen.  Yes I know please send help.
After walking around for a while I had my eyes on many different items especially some of their great Christmas stockings and ornaments.  There was one Doll Quilted Stocking that really caught my eye.  The great thing about this stocking was that it could be personalized.  Here’s a peek of that stocking:
And these little baby booties ornament with the year 2012. I guess this is perfect Christmas tree keepsake if your baby was born in 2012
Right next to the stockings there were some beautiful and classy looking Christmas Ornaments.  Out of all the ornaments there was one that really got my attention.  It was the Baby Snowprint Glitter Ornament Kit.

It is a kit that allows you to take an imprint of your child’s hand or foot in marshmallow clay and create an ornament out of it.
Even though my youngest is already six years old I had to have this for her.
I have always wanted to create one of these handprint or footprint molds of my kids.  And now I was finally getting the chance.  I am sure the kit would work best for babies but I was willing to give it a chance.
When I got home I couldn’t wait to show it to my daughter.  It would give us an opportunity to work together to create a wonderful personalized ornament that we could cherish for years to come.  After reading the instructions I called my husband in to help out.  I figured why not this could be a whole family activity.  Our son joined us at the kitchen table as well.  My husband took the marshmallow clay out of the packaging and began kneading it as per the instructions.  After doing this for several minutes my daughter and him started flattening it out into a circle.

They used and included mini-roller to make the clay smooth and flat.  My husband had to smooth it and stretch it a bit to accommodate my daughters larger hand.
My daughter then placed her hand firmly into the clay and my husband pressed each of her fingers and palm.
When she lifted her hand a very nice handprint was left behind.  Using the included cardboard cutter he then cut the clay into a circular pattern.

I carefully picked up the wax paper that the clay impression was on and set it aside to dry.  With the left over clay my husband had a great idea.  He decided to make a miniature snowman.  Using the clay, some toothpicks, bacon bits, nerd’s candies and some swizzle straws he dressed up this miniature snowman.  I set that aside as well to harden.
After two days we checked on both the ornament and the snowman.  They both had hardened and were ready for the glitter glaze.
I assisted my daughter in applying the glitter glaze to the ornament first and then whatever was left over was applied to the snowman.  I have to say they both turned out very nicely.  My daughter couldn’t wait to put her handprint ornament on our Christmas tree.  My husband was eager to display his miniature snowman as well.

The Baby Snowprint ornament looks great on our tree.
I am really glad that I found Pottery Barn Kids and look forward to getting some great gifts from them in the future.  I would highly recommend this store to my readers.  It is definitely worth a visit.
