I’ve begun to notice something very disturbing about how we educate our children. With all the hours, weeks, months, and years that our children spend in school, we never really teach them how the world works. We teach them historical dates, complex math equations, and geographical locations. Each of these are important bits of information that educated people should know, but we neglect to really teach our children how the world works around them. How many children leave school knowing how to balance a budget, invest, wisely utilize credit, run a business, or how our present economy works? I worry that we are sending our children out into the world very unprepared to actually face it successfully. We are teaching them the basic tools, but not how to integrate them into the world they live in.
There also seems to be a lack of readily available materials to explain these principles to our children. Just like children need to be able to count before they can compute a quadratic equation, children need access to introductory principles, before they can jump into world economics.
The Tuttle Twins and the Miraculous Pencil is an easy to read story that highlights basic free market economic principles. The story is both interesting and engaging, while breaking down complex principles into ideas that are easy for children to understand. While following the Tuttle Twins on a school field trip, children are introduced to concepts such as: competition, division of labor, exchange, and spontaneous order.
The Tuttle Twins and the Miraculous Pencil is a story based on the groundbreaking essay I Pencil by Leonard Read. The Tuttle Twins and the Miraculous Pencil lays a solid foundation for introducing children to the liberty-based concepts that they will need to function in the world around them.
While reading this story, my children were very surprised at how complex it was to produce simple items that they use everyday. We were able to talk about how many people have to work together to create the products and appliances that we use. This book was the perfect way to introduce free market ideas to my children. Now when we go to the store my children often ask where different products come from and how they got in the store. They see the world a little differently and are more aware of what goes into the lifestyle they enjoy. By introducing and teaching these concepts to our children when they are very young, perhaps we can better prepare the next generation to understand and utilize the ideas of free market economics.
The Tuttle Twins and the Miraculous Pencil retails for $9.99 and is available here.
