As we head into the middle of October, the new school year is in full swing! From soccer games to costume parties, the busy fall season can often run us down and leave us stuck at home, sick with cold/flu symptoms or accidentally spreading germs. Especially for kids in crowded classrooms, it’s important to practice healthy habits to keep sickness at bay – but can we do more?
For some easy, family-friendly tips for fall health, I’d love to pass along 5 tips from Michele McRae, Certified Nutritionist at Rainbow Light Nutritional Systems, the natural vitamin brand. These simple tips will help families fight germs and give everyone a better chance of staying healthy this fall.
5 Easy Ways to Keep Your Child Healthy this fall
- Cover your cough: “Always cover coughs and sneezes. Fail to do so can spread diseases.” Teach kids to “cover” their coughs and sneezes by coughing into the crook of their arm if they don’t have a tissue. This way the germs aren’t “caught” in their hands and spread to surfaces and other children by their hands.
- Hands away keep germs at bay: Always remember to keep hands away from eyes and mouth. Hands are often covered in germs. Eyes, nose and mouth are the entry points for germs to get into our body and make us sick.
- Sharing isn’t always caring: Don’t share water bottles or food. Even though we’ve all been taught to share, anything that goes in your mouth should never be shared with friends – especially during the colder months when cold and flu viruses usually spread like wildfire.
- Clean hands are key: Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer – this is probably our number 1 rule to cut down on colds and flu. A fun trick is to teach your kids to sing “Happy Birthday” while washing their hands to ensure that they get good and clean. Or even perhaps to sing “Let it go” Wash hands or use hand sanitizer especially before eating.
- Don’t forget your vitamins: Although a healthy diet is essential for all growing kids, it isn’t always enough. No matter how healthy your diet is, kids multivitamins ensure that children get the recommended daily allowance of the essential nutrients they need to grow strong and stay healthy. Adding a multivitamin is one simple thing you can add to your daily routine that will support your child’s immune system before they head out the door. We suggest trying Kids One Chewable Multivitamin or Gummy Bear Essentials Multivitamin.

Great tips! This is the one thing I hate the most about fall, getting sick and how everybody seems to think it’s okay to go out in public if you are still sick!

It’s so hard to keep our kids from getting sick at school. My granddaughter wears a hand sanitizer around her neck daily so she can keep her hands clean.

I’m looking forward to cooler weather, but definitely not this “sick” time of year. I’m dreading what my grandsons will bring home from preschool. Thanks for the tips!

thanks for the tips. I dread this season due to the kids getting sick. I stress making sure the kids wash their hands and take vitamins.
