Last night my husband and I took our kids to a pre-screening of Disney’s newest movie “Maleficent” which is due in theaters on Friday, May 30th. “Maleficent” features Angelina Jolie as one of the main characters named Maleficent and Elle Fanning plays the beautiful princess Aurora. The movie was shown in 3-D but I have to tell you it was not necessary. From the beginning of the movie we were dazzled with beautiful colors and an amazing array of fairy tale creatures that live in the Moors under Maleficent’s watch. The movie’s goal is too explore the untold story of Disney’s iconic villain from the time-honored “Sleeping Beauty”. I have to say I think it was a wonderfully told story and it was nice to see a fairy tale told from another point of view. The special effects were great and the sarcastic humor from Maleficent and the Three Fairy’s gave the movie a fun twist that adults could enjoy. The movie was also filled with action sequences that were utterly superb. The only complaint I have about “Maleficent” is that it was shown in 3-D. I have never been a big fan of 3-D movies. I think wearing special glasses to watch a movie takes away from what we are meant to see. If I really wanted to see three dimensions I would watch a live play or musical.
With that said “Maleficent” is a great family movie to see this summer. Even though it is rated PG I would not recommend it for children under the ages of 5 or 6. While the intensity and action of some scenes make the movie more enjoyable for adults and older kids it may not be suitable to little ones. I suggest you check out some previews online and make your own judgment call.
Finally I have to speak up regarding some of the criticism this movie has received in some of the reviews. Sometimes I read reviews of movies and I have to wonder if the reviewer was even watching the same film I saw. These reviewers analyze the movie like it was up for an Oscar or something. For example Claudia Puig from USA Today said it was “Nice to look at, but the magic isn’t there”. Serious!!! Claudia what movie theater were you in? I am pretty sure she did not see the same “Maleficent” that my kids and I saw. Because if she were with us she would have heard the loud applause coming from the audience at the movies conclusion. I could go on about some of the bashing that reviewers gave but why give them more credit than they deserve. I think sometimes people feel they have to bash something in order to get page views. But if your one that is concerned with what critics think, then you should know that “Maleficent” received plenty of positive reviews as well. Best advice, go take the kids to the theater yourself and form your own opinion. And then please share it here with the rest of us.

Who cares what the critics think it’s an awesome movie. what exactly are they looking for anyway. I thought Angelina did a great job portraying maleficent. and the scenes were amazing to watch. love it.
I saw the Maleficent movie and it is such an exciting movie with lots of action and I just love Angelina in this movie.
