Annie the musical

My girlfriends and I were recently discussing our favorite Broadway plays and musicals that we have seen.  Some of the names that came up were: “Les Miserables”, “Mama Mia”, “Jersey Boys”, and of course “Annie”.  I had seen all of them at one time or another.  However the last time I saw “Annie” was some 20 years ago.  And it was an off-Broadway production.  My daughter and I recently saw a program on TV all about the new production of “Annie”, that is currently on Broadway.

It was all about how they found the young girl to play Annie and how she was cast in the part.  They also went into great detail on how they searched for a dog to play the role of “Sandy” in the play.  It was very interesting how the dog trainer for the show visited various shelters around the country for that perfect dog.  They eventually picked one dog as the main Sandy and several others as backups.  We really enjoyed watching the TV program about “Annie”.  Seeing it made us both eager to watch the play in person.

Lucky us we got that opportunity on February 13th the day before Valentine’s Day.  My daughter and I took the train into Manhattan and walked a couple of blocks to The Palace Theater.

Annie the musical

We went up to the will call window to pick up out tickets for the show.  After entering the theater the usher guided us to our seats.  I had to ask her if these were the correct seats.  She double-checked and said yes.  My daughter and I just looked at each other and smiled.  The seats were 5-6 rows back from the stage and in the center.  You couldn’t ask for better seats than that.

After a while the show began and there was no turning back.  This was such a magical story and performances by all.  The girl who plays Annie, Lilla Crawford was just amazing.   She really made the character come to life with her vibrant voice and poise on the stage.  Like I said I have seen the play and movie before but nothing compared to this performance.  When the intermission came the audience was covered with smiles all around.  During the short break my daughter and I quickly used the bathroom and rushed back to our seats.  We did not want to miss a bit of the show.

After the show the fantastic performances continued.  What else can I say the singing the acting it was just superb.  And of course one cannot forget Sandy the dog.  Sandy the dog is played by a dog named Sunny.  She was found in an animal shelter in Texas.  I think it is really great that they go out and search for rescue dogs in shelters.

At the end of the play we were all so pumped up with joy and smiles we could hardly contain ourselves.  Upon exiting the theater my daughter noticed a crowd of people gathering by one of the back exit doors.  We found out that the cast usually would come out and sign autographs after the show.  So with playbooks in hand we waited patiently for them to come out.  It wasn’t long before “Annie” (Lilla Crawford) came out with several other cast members.  She was so kind and pleasant while talking with the fans and signing autographs.  She came over to my daughter and said hello and gave her a hug.  At this point my daughter lit up with joy.  She along with other cast members autographed out playbooks.  It was really something.  Just when we thought the night couldn’t get any better it did.
