Are you looking for something fun to do with the kids or grand kids this thanksgiving-How about a caramel apple turkey! We’ve got a delicious, from scratch caramel recipe, and all the tips you need to pull off this fun DIY treat!
This started out like a caramel apple but when you add the other ingredients it turns into a super cute Thanksgiving turkey! First thing you need to do is make your caramel apples! I’ve made hundreds of caramel apples in the past 2 years using this awesome from scratch recipe. I’ve learned a lot through the years and made a step by step tutorial for you. You can have the BEST caramel apples by using this recipe! Once your apples are done, it is time to get making the pieces of the turkey.
My friend Ann made these this week for the girls she teaches on Wednesday nights at church. We had fun making them together and this week my kids and I are going to make 45 of these cute caramel apple turkeys and take them to our family and friends on Thanksgiving! You will need chocolate chips, candy corn, jelly beans/gumdrops, toothpicks, caramel apples nutter butter cookies, and frosting. After your apples are made then make the heads of your turkeys while your apples cool. Using one nutter butter cookie, dab frosting to attach the chocolate chip eye and the candy corn nose.
So cute! Then carefully stick jelly beans or gumdrops onto a toothpick. The kids can really get creative here choosing one color of candy per toothpick or multiple colors per toothpick. Each caramel apple turkey needs to have 5 “feather” toothpicks. Once your apples are cooled, you can attach the head to the turkey body with a dab of frosting.
The feathers can be put in as well or to make it more fun, you can have each person say something they are thankful for as they put a “thankful feather” into the apple. That is what we did on Wednesday night at church. It was fun to hear the girls talk about what they were thankful for. I was delighted that my daughter got a feather of black jelly beans because as the Mom I claim all black jelly beans that enter the house that the kids don’t like!
The girls loved these, I loved them, they were all the rage that night when anyone saw how cute they were! This can be done as a gift or it can be done as an activity. I am looking forward to making these with my girls!
