It was Thursday afternoon and I had just finished up my work for the day when my son approached me with an inquisitive look on his face. We had just received a new Better Homes and Gardens cookbook and he was holding it open in his outstretched hands. He asked me if he could bake a cake for our friends that were coming over for dinner on Friday evening. I said sure and asked him what cake he had in mind. He put the cookbook down on the table in front of me and pointed to a carrot cake recipe. Being that this was his first time baking a cake I asked if he was sure he wanted to take on such a difficult recipe. Without hesitation he told me that he really wanted to give the recipe a try since carrot cake was one of his favorites. We agreed that on Friday after school I would take him to the supermarket so he could get all of the necessary ingredients.
Friday afternoon came along pretty quickly and we headed over to our local supermarket with a list of ingredients he had compiled. After heading back home I looked at the clock and got a little worried. Our friends were scheduled to arrive in about two hours and he had to prepare the carrot cake and I had to cook my famous buffalo hot wings. Since we only have one oven I had to make sure his cake was out of the oven in time for me to get the Buffalo wings inside. Lets just say for the next two hours the kitchen was a buzz of activity. Between him shredding the carrots and me browning the wings we looked like a pair of seasoned chefs in the kitchen of a busy restaurant. I have to say it was a great experience working together with my son in the kitchen. I had the opportunity to give him some tips and pointers that I had learned from my many years of cooking.
Before long two to three hours had passed and my wife and daughter arrived with our two guests. This is my wife’s childhood friend from Kazakhstan who was visiting United States for the first time with her son. The timing of their arrival was perfect. They had the opportunity to see my son and I putting the finishing touches on our dishes. For the carrot cake he was putting a homemade frosting between the two cake layers and on top of the cake as well. With the wings they got to see me dipping the fully cooked wings in my special secret hot wing sauce.
After my daughter set the table and put out some appetizer salads that my wife had just bought we all sat down for a delicious meal. It was great seeing the looks on our guest’s faces when they first tasted my buffalo hot wings. Neither of them had ever tried hot wings before and they were both very impressed. I did warn them to go slow since my hot wing sauce tends to creep up on you. Meaning the more you eat the hotter they seem to get.
Overall their first wing experience was good. We had a very nice time joking and chatting. It is always nice to share a good hot meal and conversation with friends. After we were filled up from the wings the kids left the table and returned to their FIFA soccer tournament on the Playstation and us adults hung around for some table talk. About twenty minutes later I noticed the look of discomfort on our friends face. We asked if she was okay and she said it was just a little bit of heartburn.
Well I have to say she is not the first person that reacted that way to my hot wings. The only thing she seemed to be worried about was missing out on my sons delicious looking carrot cake. That is when my wife stood up and said, “Don’t worry, I’ve got just the thing for your heartburn.” After searching in the cabinet where we keep our medicine she came back to the table with a bottle of Nexium 24HR.
