Basher Science and Mattel have teamed up to make learning fun!

When Basher Science company contacted me recently about reviewing their latest products I jumped at the chance! My 10 year old daughter LOVES science so I knew these would be fun items to review for our family. What I didn’t expect was how much my other children enjoyed them too! Basher Science has been around for years, but recently teamed up with Mattel to make learning even more fun! They have a new card game, figurines, and play sets in addition to their traditional books, posters, and more!

I asked my girls to play with these items and give their honest reviews of each item which is what you’ll read below. The day I opened the Basher Science package, my 10 year old literally shrieked, “A periodic table that is cute, oh I love it! Can I hang it by my bed? Please oh please?” My reply, “Yes.” She hollered hooray all the way to her room to hang it up! We also received the Rocks and Minerals book, 2 in 1 card game set, and some rocks and minerals figurines with carrying key chains!

Basher Science items

Basher Science 2 in 1 Card Game-War

Basher Science card game

After my 10 year old returned from hanging up her Periodic Table she opened the card game and started reading the rules. The game is from the makers of UNO, so one of the card games you can play with it is similar to war, but with fun twists, it’s a 2 player game. The card game itself comes with 22 cards, 2 score cards (play to 4 or 6 points), 2 tokens, and a mini figurine. After reading the rules, we set up the game, each player gets 8 cards, you draw three from your face down draw pile and go to battle!

Usually the highest number wins, but each of the cards has a special power as well as an interesting fact about the mineral/rock that is on the card. For example on round one, my daughter played Granite with a power of 1. I played Feldspar with power of 8. Since I had the highest number I thought I had it in the bag, BUT you can see on the bottom of her card, she won since I played an 8.

Basher Science round 1

She won the round and moved her token on her score card. She also won the next two rounds-that girl is quite the strategist!

Finally the 4th round I won and it was a good thing since the game was going to be over if I didn’t get the next point! I put down the Diorite and she put down the Slate. Wohoo! I WON the round. Together we had fun trying to read each other’s faces and next moves. She ended up winning all 3 full games we played. This is just a small sampling of the game, it really has so many fun twists and turns!

Basher Science 2 in 1 Card Game-Match

The other option for the card game is a match game, where you can take a little more time to read the fun facts on the cards! The game’s instructions call for only 16 cards, but we were feeling kind of crazy and used them all! My daughter won this game too!

Basher Science figures and toys

We received a few of the figurines to try out too. These were a huge hit with my other 3 daughters. The pink carrying key chain case opens up and they can put different rocks and minerals inside. The carrying case fits together and stays together nicely with 2 small clasps. This set came with 6 additional playing cards which were fun to add to the card game.

We also received a diamond figurine, but the picture I took before I let the kids play is blurry. Of course today it went to show and tell with my 6 year old and she left it in her desk so I can’t take a new photo. It came with a couple playing cards too. It is fun that we can add to our collection bit by bit! My 8 year old said she thinks these figurines are so cute and enjoyable to play with.

Basher Science Books

I recall learning about rocks and minerals in 9th grade. I bet my 9th grade science teacher Mr. Temple can still recall how much I struggled identifying them. I’d go in early and stay late just so I could get a decent grade on my identification tests. I wish I would have had these fun Basher Science books back then! These books are jam packed with info and they are cleverly illustrated.

My daughter’s review was, “There are some big words in there, but this is science and it has big words. Everything is broken down and it goes into detail about each item on the periodic table. An example would be, Arsenic is often referred to the “poison of kings” because for along time it was the toxin of choice for getting rid of the person in line for the throne before you. It was also used by famous painters like van Gogh to make emerald green! It has all the info about it too, like it’s name on the periodic table. It’s fun and has pictures.”

This is just the tip of the iceberg, there are chemistry sets, biology sets and even more in the rocks and minerals. I’ve barely skimmed over the top and they plan to realease more items all throughout 2017! Basher Science items can be purchased at Target and they are pretty inexpensive! The card game was only $8.99 and the set of figurines and the books were also only $8.99 each. Any of these items would make a great inexpensive gift idea! Of the items we reviewed above, what items sounds most fun to you? Leave me a comment below telling me!

Thanks for reading! ~ CJ
