If you are look for fun ways to practice spelling words then you’ve come to the right place! My 2nd grader’s teacher is AMAZING and has a very fun and creative way to have his class practice their spelling words! He has tossed out the traditional spelling workbook (can I get a hallelujah?!) and shared this super fun spelling program. (I need to give credit, where credit is due…but I don’t know where he found this program or what it is called-so if this idea was originally yours…THANK YOU-the credit all goes to you!) All I know is it works wonders every night at my house when my children WANT to do their spelling homework!

Each week they are given 9 different “tasks” they choose to complete 3 of them by Friday morning and turn that in for their spelling work for the week. All tasks are done at home and signed off by a parent. If it is possible they are done in the spelling notebook that was provided to her. It is amazing to see my 2nd grader at the beginning of the week compared to Thursday night.

Cream writing! On a cookie sheet spray some shaving cream or whip cream and give them their words to write out. Once they have it spelled ask them to spell it out loud to you. This doubles the practice and allows the parent to be multi tasking. I can cook dinner while she sits at the counter, writes the words and then spells them out! This can also be done with peanut butter or pudding! Let your child choose!

Minute to win it! Give your child a timer (I let my daughter use my cell phone timer and run it herself) Set the timer for 1 minute. Have them write word #1 as many times as they can in that 1 minute of time. Then when time is up, restart the timer and write word #2 as many times as they can in a minute. When all the words are complete have them figure out which word they wrote the most of. Ask them why they think they wrote that one so fast. (Yes, we just turned spelling practice into logical reasoning!) 🙂

Vowel/Consonant Fractions! Write each spelling word then turn it into a vowel/consonant fraction. For example. Her first word was Blossom. It has 2 vowels and 5 consonants. So her fraction was 2/5. Fun right?

Puzzle! Turn your spelling words into a crossword puzzle or word search. You can google free puzzle maker websites and have them type in their spelling words to create a puzzle. Once it creates the blank puzzle, then print it out and have them complete the puzzle. My daughter’s teacher requests a blank one so he can try out the puzzle too!

Creative Writing! Have your child get on the computer and type out his spelling words. Then get creative with the fonts, colors and sizes. After they are done, have them choose 5 words to type into a internet search browser and get a matching picture. This lets them type those words again and not even realize it! I strongly suggest adult supervision on this one….for obvious safety reasons.

Pen Pal! Send a letter to an imaginary pen pal using all your spelling words. This one was a little tricky for my daughter, but it made a huge difference in her having to come up with sentences because she KNEW what the words meant after that spelling practice night!

Chalk it up! Write your spelling words with sidewalk chalk!

Finger Fortune Teller! Remember back in the day when we were in school and these finger fortune tellers were all the rage? Make a spelling list finger fortune teller! You can watch a video on YouTube if you don’t know how to make one. Instead of numbers and colors, the outer pages are spelling words. She tells you to pick a word, has to spell it. Then tells you to pick another word, she has to spell it while moving it back and forth, and then finally underneath they were “fortunes” using some of the spelling words. For example, if you landed on “SKIP” which was one of her words, the underside said, “Don’t skip your spelling practice or you will be sorry on test day!” It was so much fun to make and play! My daughter played on the bus with the kids the entire week!
