How to make an adorable t-shirt scarf! {DIY Tutorial}

If you have a pie plate and a good pair of scissors–you can make this easy and  adorable t-shirt scarf in less than 15 minutes!

I am in LOVE with my new scarf! It is fun, matches every outfit, and the best part: I made it myself out of a t-shirt! I can’t wait to tell you how it’s made, but first gather what you need!

*T-shirt size XL or bigger (Hint-hit up the 2nd hand store for inexpensive t-shirts!)

*Good pair of scissors. (Hint-I recommend fabric scissors, NOT pinking shears like I used in my scarf for this tutorial)

*A 9-inch pie plate or bowl

*Fabric marker or pencil

*15 minutes!

That is it! To get started you trace your pie plate/bowl onto your t-shirt and cut out the circle. I used a 10 inch pie plate and it caused the scarf to be a bit too long for my short torso. If you are taller, I’d recommend the 10 inch pie plate as your guide!

Next, you cut that circle into a spiral. Again, I recommend using regular scissors, but I was at a play date with my kiddos and friends when I made this scarf and pinking shears is what was available at that time.

Third, run your fingers up and down while pulling and stretching out your spiral strand. This will cause the edges to roll themselves inwards so you won’t get random pieces of t-shirt shedding off the scarf. This is another reason I recommend using regular scissors over pinking shears….the crinkled edges left t-shirt debris on my  sweater the first couple of times I wore it. Next, bend the now long and stretched strands in half to make a scarf.

Then do it all over again until you have your desired fullness of your scarf. I chose to do 10 circles for mine. Once you have as many strands as you want cut a scrap of fabric and tie the strands together at the bend. Tuck the”tied” part into the scarf.

I used a hair band to keep my scarf together in the front.

Viola! You are done! Now comes the fun part–accessorizing the t-shirt scarf to match any outfit! I have 4 daughters and an insane amount of hair flowers, I began clipping them on! I even used a headband flower of my 4 month old’s and was pleased with how beautiful it looked!

My friends and I thought it was adorable! I couldn’t wait to wear it to church that weekend! I got several compliments on it! I love that I can choose any color of flower or broach to amp up the style of this scarf!

So easy, so fun, and who knew you could make a scarf out of a t-shirt? This would make an AWESOME last minute gift idea! It can even be made for young girls just use a smaller 6 inch bowl so you will have the right length! I can’t wait to make a red one next! Are you going to make one? Please post a picture on our Facebook page if you do make one because I want to see!

    What a great idea, and something even someone like me with no sewing skills can do. Pinned it for future reference. Thanks!
