Vegetable Slicer review from Epica Manual Multi-Blade Spiral Slicer

12/01/2012 By Irina 7 Comments

It slices and dices and chops it’s the amazing machine.  I am not sure if anyone remembers that phrase it slices and dices.  I think was from some infomercial back in the 80’s or 90’s.  I don’t actually remember the name of the product just that phrase.  I do recall wondering if any of those products actually worked.  And more importantly did they make your tasks in the kitchen easier.
Recently I was contacted by a company to review a new product.  The name of the product is the Epica Manual Multi-BladeSpiral Vegetable Slicer.  Wow that is a mouthful.  But then again the name of the product describes what is does so that’s a good thing.  After receiving the Epica Vegetable slicer I was quite skeptical as to its performance.  From the image on the box I could tell that it was made of mostly plastic so this wasn’t too encouraging.  The box had all of these images of everything that you could slice and grate and all the vegetables and fruits that you could do it to.
I was eager to get started but wanted to wait for my husband to get back from an appointment.  He and I enjoy testing products out together especially stuff that is used around the kitchen since we both love to cook.   Actually I should say that he loves to cook and I am more of an enjoy-er of food.  Anyway when he got home I had the Epica Vegetable Slicer out of the box and ready to go with an apple, cabbage, potatoes and beets lined up. Apples for the initial test. Cabbage, beets and potatoes for the borsch I was going to make for my family.

We set up first with the spiral slicer blade and put in a clean apple.  The multiple spikes on the spinner held the apple while a metal cylinder in the slicer blade held the other end of the apple.  With some force applied to the plastic sled my husband began cranking the handle.  I forgot to mention the entire device is held firmly on the counter-top by 4 suction cups.  After spinning the handle very thin spiral shaped apple slices started coming out behind the blade.  I have to say they were very thin and delicious.  The amazing thing is that the apples seeds were not sliced and were easy to discard.  Next we washed off the blade and sled and put a potato on the holder.

We switched the blade to spaghetti slices.  Once again my husband spun the arm on the slicer and out came very thin and long slices of the potato.  They were perfect for frying and creating a very interesting side dish or for adding to a soup. Those some type of “Mushroom looking things” in case you are wondering were a part of potato taking out from the slicer. LOL..
            Next we tried a cabbage.

Word of advice do not try to use a whole cabbage with this slicer.  This is where the plastic construction becomes a hindrance.  The whole cabbage proved to be to heavy for the spinning arm and the cabbage kept falling off of failing to move.  My husband was also worried that the plastic handle would crack and fall off if he continued.  He decided to cut the cabbage in half to make it more manageable. I am glad he did that because the result was just fantastic.  The slicing blade shredded the cabbage into small manageable pieces.  It would be perfect for make a salad, coleslaw, or in our case a nice borsch soup.
Next we sliced the beets

Beets were just like apples were super easy to slice. This is what we end up with with for our soup BORSHCH Russian Style.

BORSHCH was pretty easy to cook with an add the above ingredients, expect that I had to sautee few veggies separately that were not part of the slicing machine (like carrots and onions)
In the end the Borsch came out pretty well and if you like I will gladly share my recipe with you.

Just be sure to add dill and sour cream to it. It is delicious.

In conclusion I have to say I am quite surprised by this handy dandy vegetable slicer from Epica.  For the price they are asking ($19.95 and eligible for a free shipping from Amazon) this slicer is a great deal.  I look forward to using it in the future with my husband of course.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

has your slicer held up? I saw quite a few reviews on Amazon complaining about it, but it’s a much better price than some of the competitors’ products.

Hello Kim, thanks for your question. I have used it about 5 times and it held up pretty well. It did a good job for spiral slicing. If you are looking for more professional long term cooking results and slicing I would suggest to invest in a better slicer (not this cheap plastic one) simply because I see it will not last long. It may fall apart after another 5 heavy duty slicing similar to what I did in the post above. Let me know if you have other questions…

I’ve got a food processor, but I wanted the spiral effect to make “zoodles,” which the food processor isn’t capable of. Any suggestions on something better quality that would do this well and possibly do paper-thin slicing like a mandolin?

Then I would suggest purchasing this slicer. It will do the tricks exactly as you want them done. I think for spiral slicer you will definitely like this one. I was just not recommending it for heavy duty food processing but other than that it is great! I like it… YOu going to like the thin slicing as well…
