I can’t believe we are already to the letter H. Once I finally started making more time to do these activities with my kids they just seem to be flying by. It has turned into such a great way for us to get fun play time in each day. It also helps to mix things up a bit so we aren’t having to just play with the same toys everyday. For the letter H we did more hands on activities instead of mostly crafts. This was an even better way to mix it up a bit with our new letter.
Here are the activities we did for the Letter H:
The first letter H activity that we did was play Hopscotch.
The supplies you will need:
- Colored Tape (we used painters tape because it is easy to pull up and it was what we had on hand)
- Paper (optional)
How to do this activity:
- First you will need to tape down the squares for the hopscotch. Typically there are 10 squares. I tried to make the pieces of tape as close to the same size by eye balling the length of tape by holding it next to the last piece of tape I had ripped off. Then I just placed the pieces of tape onto the ground in our living room.
- You can stop with just the first step or you can add numbers into each box. One way you can do this would be to cut out bubble numbers from 1-10 out of paper. Then tape the paper inside each of the boxes. This would be a great way to teach these beginning letters to your preschooler.
This is an activity we have done in the past. It is so simple and inexpensive. It is also a super easy clean up but is also an activity that can be left for days without it getting in the way of the other day to day activities. It is also a fun activity because it can be played in so many different ways and it is a great way for your child to put their energy to use!
The next letter H activity we did was make hamburgers.
The supplies you will need:
- Construction paper of various colors
- Scissors
- Glue
How to do this activity:
- First I talked to my daughter and asked her what she wanted to put on her hamburger. She decided that she needed hamburger buns, a hamburger patty, cheese, lettuce and a tomato.
- Based off of the items she chose I gave her a piece of paper that was the same color as that item.
- I then let her cut out the item for the hamburger from each of the pieces of paper.
- Once all her hamburger items were cut out she then glued them to a piece of paper to make her hamburger.
Along with doing the hamburger craft we also made real hamburgers for dinner that night. They were also able to choose what they wanted on their hamburgers. It was a fun and yummy way to incorporate the letter H in another part of our day.
Another one of the letter H activities that we did was make honey bubbles.
The supplies you will need:
- 4 C of Water
- 1 C of Dish Soap
- 2 TB Honey
- Pipe Cleaners
How to do this activity:
- Help your child pour 4 cups of water into a big mixing bowl.
- Have them pour in 1 cup of dish soap into the same mixing bowl as the water. Before mixing have your child observe the placement of the water and the dish soap. Ask them why they think the soap is all settled underneath the water.
- Add in 2 TB of honey. Observe again where the honey went. It is also fun watching the honey get poured in slowly. Ask your child what their observations are.
- Mix together until it is all combined.
- Make your own bubble wands with the pipe cleaners.
- Have fun and blow some bubbles!
I was a little skeptical about this activity. I had never heard of honey being in bubbles before but it did end up being a fun science experiment, seeing how the three substances reacted to one another. Then once it was all mixed the mixture worked great for making bubbles!
The last letter H activity we did was paint a hive.
The supplies you will need:
- Paper
- Paint Brush
- Paint
How to do this activity:
- Have your child paint the yellow part of the hive. They can also paint some black outlines of bees around the hive.
- Set aside to dry.
- Once the bees and hive are dry continue painting. This time add the black lines to the hive and the hive door. They can also add some yellow to their bees.
- Along with the hive and bees my daughter also wanted to add the word buzz and the word hive to the page.
This activity ended up being a little different then planned. The original plan was to make a hive on top of a hand print. I showed my daughter what the plan was and she told me she didn’t like that plan, that she just wanted to paint a hive. So to avoid an unnecessary fight I went along with her plan instead and it ended up so much cuter than my plan! Kids sure know how to surprise us sometimes.
What letter H activities can you think of? Which of these activities would your child like doing the most?
