My kids love hands on activities and activities that they can learn while having fun. Making a cloud in a jar was both of these things. It wasn’t just fun for them, it was fun for me too. We had fun watching this fun experiment and discussing with each other what was happening. It was also great for me that the items needed wouldn’t break the bank, most of them we already had on hand. It was also a plus that it was something that my kids could mostly do on their own and all I had to do was supervise and teach.
Supplies Needed:
- Shaving Cream (I got one from the dollar store)
- Food Coloring
- Glass Jars or Cups
- Water
Step 1:
Fill the glasses with water. Top the water with a “cloud” of shaving cream. We topped ours with a decent amount, you don’t have to be stingy.
Step 2:
Add food coloring to the top, toward the sides is better, of the shaving cream cloud.
I just added the food coloring by itself. I have seen this done where you dilute the food coloring with water first, which may help with getting the food coloring to pass through the shaving cream faster. With just the food coloring it did move through the “cloud” to the water slowly.
Step 3:
Wait and watch. You can also add more food coloring if needed.
Since we only used the food coloring without diluting it we did have to add the coloring closer to the sides of the shaving cream. If you dilute the coloring with water it is able to break through the middle of the shaving cream easier.
The kids had a lot of fun watching the colors move through the shaving cream and drip into the water. The more colors that did make it to the water the more colors the water changed. Eventually it ended up being a gross brown color but leading up to that it was red or green or orange. It was a great activity to teach colors and color mixing.
Do your kids love science experiments? What would they love about this experiment? Let us know in the comments if you have or if you do try this activity at home!
