I really enjoy spending time in the kitchen and cooking all types of foods. As a young girl, I envisioned making memories with my children in the kitchen. Now, as my children are getting older and capable of following written instructions, I have found that those envisioned dreams of mine are possible…if only I had a little more patience. HA! I tend to get overwhelmed with all the extra cooks in the kitchen, but I welcome the opportunity to teach my children a life skill. The Real Cooking product line has given me a newfound hope for cooking with my children.
Skyrocket Toys provided me with the Real Cooking Ultimate Baking Starter Set and Chocolate Pen for review. I welcome the opportunity to share my experience with both products to you.
With Easter just days away, my girls and I were excited to make Easter themed cupcakes using the Ultimate Baking Starter Set and Chocolate Pen.
Real Cooking Ultimate Baking Starter Set
I was very impressed and excited to see all the tools and supplies provided in the Ultimate Baking Starter Set. The instructions were very easy to follow. My two oldest daughters and I worked side by side together to bake delicious cupcakes as part of our Easter celebration.
One of my favorite tools in the Ultimate Baking Starter Set was the egg cracker. I dread when my children ask if they can help crack an egg, but not any more thanks to this! Step by step we worked through creating mini cupcakes. My daughters were delighted with the opportunity and kept saying things like, “I love this day.” As well as, “I am going to learn to be the best cook in the world.” Positive words of encouragement really make moments like this enjoyable.
The Ultimate Baking Starter Set gave my daughters, and me, the chance to try something new and create delicious treats to share with our family and friends.
While following the instructions for the frosting, we struggled to get the consistency just right. We never got it to work right following the instructions provided. It was always too runny. I think I could have added some additional powdered sugar to the mix, but with my lack of experience in that department, I figured I shouldn’t mess with it. So, I headed to the pantry and grabbed a can of frosting, and we used that instead. Using the same instructors that were provided to fill the frosting bag, the cupcakes turned out beautifully.
Decorating with the finishing touches was also fun for my children. They were able to create beautiful works of art.
Real Cooking Chocolate Pen
I was very excited to receive the Chocolate Pen as part of this opportunity. Everything I had researched about it really made candy making and decorating come alive for me in my mind. The package comes with four chocolate colors, over 40 different mold options, and a super awesome, battery operated, guiding pen.
After reading the instructions and doing everything it suggested, I struggled to get the chocolate to be the right “liquid” consistency. The instructions indicate that you just place the chocolate pouches in very hot water, allowing the chocolate to melt. Once melted, it can be prepared and put into the guiding pen.
Unfortunately, after literally hours of trying to get the chocolate to melt as the instructions indicated, I had no success making it work well in the pen. Time and time again, I reheated the water in the microwave and followed the instructions trying to get the chocolate to melt like it was suppose to…but it never worked. It was frustrating that there were no other suggestions on the instructions to help troubleshoot this situation. Seems like one that would be pretty common for others to experience.
None the less, that didn’t make the cupcake decorating a flop because we were able to use the mold and chocolate together to make really cute cupcake toppers. By pressing the softened chocolate into the mold and letting it sit in the refrigerator for about 5 minutes, we created some adorable Easter themed candies to put onto of our cupcakes.
It is still pretty frustrating for me to think about all the time and effort I attempted to make the pen work, but I am not going to give up on it just yet. If I can find the right way to melt the chocolate to get it to “liquid” state, then it will an extremely fun and useful tool to have in the kitchen. It will be great for my children to use, just as soon as I figure out how to use it.
In the end, even with some frustrating moments, this was a great experience for us. Not only did we get to learn new skills, but we also got to share the end results with those around us. These are great products that provide the ability to obtain a life skill and passion for baking. Using the tools and tips provided with each product, our cooking abilities are going to be forever strengthened. That to me, is a priceless gift to be cherished. I would encourage you to create the same memories and moments with your little ones using the Real Cooking products!
