Growing up I sort of had this thought that everything my mom made us for dinner or dessert was a family super secret recipe. One of those recipes were bongo bars and I thought that was a family recipe ever since today. I made some bongo bars last night, because of a pregnancy craving I had for chocolate and it made me start thinking about if anyone else knew what bongo bars were. I searched for them online and found a few posts about them and so I decided that even though they are not a super secret family recipe that I would help spread the word about these delicious morsels of goodness.
The only way I know how to explain what bongo bars are is that they are pretty much chocolate chip cookie brownies. They look like brownies but they taste like chocolate chip cookies. The recipe for bongo bars is super simple. It takes about 5-10 minutes of preparation time and then they are in the oven for 40 minutes. Below I will write out the recipe with pictures and then have just the recipe at the very bottom of the page because I know some people prefer one way over the other!
Ingredients:
- 3/4 C softened butter
- 1 1/4 C white sugar
- 1 1/4 C brown sugar
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 3 eggs
- 2 1/4 C flour
- 2 1/2 tsp. basking powder
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 package of chocolate chips
Directions:
1. Cream together butter, white and brown sugar, vanilla and eggs.
2. Add dry ingredients.
3. Fold in chocolate chips.
4. Spread out into a 9×13 pan. Mine is a non-stick pan so I didn’t have to put anything down but my mom recommends putting down parchment paper so you aren’t scraping off bongo bars from your pan for days,
5. Bake at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes. I only did 40 and they ended up being gooey in the middle especially right after taking them out but the longer they sit out the crunchier they will get.
6. Take out of the oven and let cool probably for 10-15 minutes before cutting up and serving.
There are the finished bongo bars ready to be devoured! Try them out and let me know what you think or let me know if you have ever heard of bongo bars before I am very curious now about how popular or unknown this wonderful treat from my childhood is! (Below is the written out directions with no pictures!)
