Summer has started but that does not mean that the learning has to stop. We are still working on our letters, preparing our noggins for the new school year in a couple of months. So we continued with our letters and learned about some of the fun things that start with the letter W!
These are the activities we did for the letter W:
The first letter W activity that we did was make worms in mud.
Ingredients:
- Gummy Worms
- Oreo’s (I just got a small container of mini Oreo’s)
- Jello Pudding Mix
- Milk
How to make worms in mud:
- First make the pudding according to the directions on the package. Set aside.
- Crush the Oreo’s. You can do this either by putting them in a Ziploc bag and crumbling them or you can put them in a blender or food processor. Set aside.
- Assemble your worm and dirt cups by filling a cup with pudding and topping with the crushed Oreo’s. Then place a few of the gummy worms in the pudding.
My kids were unsurprisingly excited for this activity. They were able to help make them and they then helped devour them as well.
The next activity we did for the letter W was water our plants.
It was really rainy here so instead of watering our outside plants we watered our inside plants, a few small pots of flowers we are growing. This was a super easy activity but also an educational one. We talked about why plants need water and then observed our growing flowers, a few of them are starting to sprout!
Our third letter W activity we to make watermelons.
Supplies:
- Paper Plate
- Green Crayon
- Red Crayon
- Elmer’s Glue
- Dry Black Beans
How to make watermelons:
- Cut the paper plate in half.
- Color the outside curved edge of the plate green.
- Color the rest of the plate red.
- Glue on dry black beans to represent the watermelon seeds.
This was another easy activity but one that we could get more creative with than the last one. We talked about what each part of our paper watermelons represented and then had fun making each of our watermelons our own.
The last letter W activity we did was make webs.
Supplies:
- White Crayon
- White Paper
- Water Colors
- Paint Brush
How to make a web:
- Draw a web on the piece of paper using the white crayon. Make sure to press hard while drawing.
- Paint over the web with the water colors and the paint brush.
- Let dry.
This activity was one that my kids both took their own liberties with. My son didn’t draw hard enough at first so I ended up drawing his web. Then he decided he was done painting after only about a minute. My daughter decided to draw a web with the crayon and then paint a web. It is always fun how each of my kids will put their own spin on these fun activities.
