This toy I am about to show you is one that I knew I needed to get. First off it was something my son would love, power tools, and second it reminded me of one of my favorite childhood toys, Lite Brite. If you are a child of the 90’s you know exactly what I am talking about and you can remember spending hours of fun creating designs with your Lite Brite. This was the fun that I wanted to show my kids so I was excited to show them the Design Drill BrightWorks from Educational Insights. I knew they would have just as much fun as I used to or possibly even more!
*I got the product listed below from Educational Insights in exchange for my honest opinion.
The Design Drill BrightWorks Includes:
-A socket bit and a flat head bit (not pictured)
-The black activity board
-80 Bolts that come in 6 different colors (Pink, yellow, orange, green, blue and black)
-Power Drill
-Instruction Packet
Not Included but are needed to play are 3 AA and 3 AAA batteries.
Design Drill Brightworks is recommended for ages 3-6.
I agree and disagree with this. First off I am 25 and I think this toy is very fun. So I wouldn’t be surprised if kids up to the age of 10 would have fun with this toy. Next thing is that I agree that it is better for kids who are a little older. My son pictured above is 2 1/2. He loved the Design Drill but he does have a hard time holding the drill for too long. His hand is just too small.
Then my daughter who is 4 has no problem holding the drill for an extended period of time. I would say that children as young as 2 would have fun, under supervision, learning how to use this fun tool. Then when they get older they will have fun making designs and creating.
The Instruction Booklet comes with some fun recommended patterns.
The booklet is great for teaching children how to follow directions. It is also nice for those parents who aren’t that creative (me). My son likes for me to put the bolts in a pattern and he drills them all in. This is a lot easier for me because of the booklet and their designs are very fun! The above boat is one of my favorites along with the rocket ship.
Now finally to the connection to Lite Brite.
The board can light up and since the bolts are translucent (besides the black ones) the colors light up in the dark! They also have a sound setting so as you drill in the bolts the board lights up but when you are done it goes dark. This setting is not my favorite but my kids seem to have fun with it.
My kids love putting a design together on the board and then running in the bathroom to see how it looks in the dark. It is like an extra surprise.
Does this toy remind you of your childhood? What kind of designs could you see your child creating with the Design Drill BrightWorks?
