Take a look how my kitchen used to look
Today was day two of our kitchen/living room renovation and we had some surprises. As always with an old house you never know what is behind the walls. In this case after we removed the old kitchen cabinets and took out the facade above the cabinets we found an old arch that was hidden. We thought that there was nothing but walls behind the facade but instead we were faced with something ugly and well built.
In the process of trying to remove this well built structure part of the ceiling came down along with it a cascade of small pellets that they must have used for insulation back in the day. We have no idea what these pellets are made of, hopefully nothing toxic. So now we have to replace the ceiling with sheet rock and the same with the rough walls. Tomorrow We will attack the marble tile floors and try to rip them up. This may prove to be the most back breaking task of all. They sit upon a layer of mortar which was placed over a wire mesh. If anyone has any tips on how to get this up we would really appreciate the advice. Stay tuned for more updates.
