One of my favorite things to do around the house with my leisure time is arts and crafts and cooking. Most of the cooking I do by myself but for my family. However with the arts and crafts I usually involve my children with projects that they can handle.
I was recently thinking about a way to combine my two hobbies into one activity that everyone can enjoy. One I idea I had was to create custom designed olive oil and vinegar gift bottles and give them away as gifts. You know the kind of bottles that department stores charge an arm and a leg for. I figured there must be a way to create some really nice glass bottles that we could all work on together. We ended up purchasing several glass bottles and plastic jars from www.ebottles.com.
They had a wide variety of bottles to choose from and some that were just perfect for our project. We purchased some acrylic paint, glitter, and wax from the arts and craft store. My daughter went to town with the paint and the glitter on the outside of a few glass bottles. We then added some Spanish olive oil, dried rosemary, and thyme to the bottles. They were then sealed with the melted wax. Both bottles looked really special and were ready to present as gifts.
For the plastic bottles we decided to make our own custom personalized water bottles to give out to our friends and family. We found special markers at the crafts store that wrote on plastic bottles. When we got home she wrote out the names of a few of our family members on the bottles and stenciled in some floral designs for the girls and sports designs for the boys. We decided to fill the bottles with fresh spring water that way they would be ready to use.
The next weekend we went over to my mother in-laws house for a family gathering. We presented the olive oil and vinegar bottles to my mother in-law and one of her friends. They really loved them. The water bottles were received well also. The kids and my father in-law really liked the designs and personal touch. Overall my daughter and I had lots of fun creating these homemade gifts for our family It’s always a pleasure to create things with your own hands.
